On 29 June 2021, EASO successfully launched the tenth edition of its flagship report, the EASO Asylum Report 2021: Annual Report on the Situation of Asylum in the European Union, through an online event which was attended by more than 350 participants. 

The findings of the report point to persisting migration flows to Europe, although applications for international protection dropped by 32% compared to 2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic. As asylum and reception systems navigated through the restrictive measures, national authorities allocated resources to adapt working methods, implemented digital solutions to process new applications and reduced pending cases. 

In her recorded introductory remarks, the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, stated that “our policies must be based on facts, and this report provides those facts. It gives the analysis and insight we need to further develop our policies”.

 
Based on over 1,200 reliable sources, the report includes diverse perspectives from various stakeholders working in the field of asylum, including international organisations, civil society organisations, academia and researchers. 

The key developments which are analysed in the report are available in the National Asylum Developments Database, a user-friendly database which can be searched by country, year and topic. Information is also drawn from the Information and Documentation System (IDS), the EASO Case Law Database and the EASO Early Warning and Preparedness System (EPS).
