EASO’s video on age assessment for asylum practitioners now available in 23 languages

Age assessment

Complementing the EASO practical guide on age assessment published in 2018, EASO has recently produced an animation on age assessment for practitioners, translated into 22 European languages.

The animation presents the key elements of the guide in a way that is easy to understand. It summarises the main considerations and principles in the design and implementation of the age assessment process in compliance with the principle of the best interests of the child.

The animation details the necessary safeguards to ensure a right-compliant and reliable age assessment process. In particular, the ‘cascade model’ proposed by EASO is explained. This model defines the order in which multidisciplinary methods of age assessment should be used in order to reach conclusive results, bearing in mind the margin of error applicable to any method of age assessment.

The target audience of the animation includes national officials, such as reception and asylum officials, migration and law enforcement officers, as well as also social workers, radiologists, pediatricians, public prosecutors and other stakeholders.

The video is now available in 22 new EU languages on this YouTube playlist.

A new video animation on age assessment for children will also be available in June 2020. Stay tuned!
