Training for experts participating in the Asylum Support Teams (ASTs)

Background Information

The EUAA has developed training that will provide experts participating in the Asylum Support Teams (ASTs) with the knowledge and skills needed to perform tasks in the context of the Agency’s Operations.

Training for experts participating in the Asylum Support Teams (ASTs)

The training proposed, consists of four blocks that are outlined below:

  • Block Ι: Pre-deployment training

Block Ι consists of a fully online pre-deployment induction training, which is mandatory for all members of the ASTs irrespective of profiles, levels of expertise and the specific operational context.

The aim of this pre-deployment induction training is to prepare the experts by introducing them to the EUAA’s mission and the broad legal framework applicable for international protection, as well as providing an overarching overview on relevant operational and thematic aspects, including available EUAA practical tools, vulnerable groups in the asylum context, communication and professional wellbeing.

The experts will be enrolled to this pre-deployment induction training, upon confirmation of your deployment.

  • Block ΙΙ – Training related to the duties of expert’s groups

Block ΙΙ comprises of training relevant to the duties of the experts and their functions. Expert profiles have been grouped thematically and a learning path, based on the European asylum curriculum modules, has been identified for each profile.

The training included under this block is mandatory, for experts whose deployment is longer than six months or for experts whose deployment is for the duration of less than six months, if training needs have been identified, and aims to ensure that experts will be performing tasks in a harmonised way that is consistent with the EUAA approach. Training on the European asylum curriculum modules can be delivered either fully online or can follow a blended learning methodology, combining an e-learning component (on the EUAA Learning Management System) and a face-to-face or webinar session.

Experts will have access to mandatory training of block II at the beginning of their deployment. However, the training will continue whilst experts are working in the field.

  • Block III: Technical and operational training (county specific)

Block III is a technical and operational training component focusing specifically on the relevant context for each country and operation, providing the members of the ASTs with the relevant information on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) relevant to the national context/specific country office and workflows, the relevant national legal framework and country specific safety and security related aspects. This block will be delivered at the start of the deployment and will consist of a face-to-face/webinar component only.

  • Block IV: Continuing professional development

Block IV is concerned with the continuing professional development of members of the ASTs on a longer-term basis, offering the possibility to partake in further relevant training offers as far as available and depending on the individual experts’ profile, level of seniority and role in a specific context.

The training will be composed of the modules of the European asylum curriculum, including modules, courses and continuing professional development components as relevant. The relevant components are to be identified and agreed upon jointly between C1 (country offices), C2 (Training Planning and Programming Sector), C3 (Courts and Tribunals Sector) and the relevant Member State authorities hosting the expects, if applicable.
