On 3 and 4 February 2020, a consultation meeting with Egyptian authorities was held in Malta. Representatives from EASO and the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice and Public Prosecution Office exchanged their views on opportunities for future cooperation and laid the basis for the development of a Roadmap between EASO and Egypt in the months to come.

H.E. Ambassador El Sherbini (Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and H.E. Ambassador Naela Draz also had a meeting with EASO’s Executive Director Ms. Nina Gregori.

On 18 and 19 February 2020, EASO organised a seminar on asylum systems and procedures under the Common European Asylum System in Alexandria targeting Egyptian officials from several national authorities, namely the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Defence, Public Prosecution Office, National Council of Human Rights and Administrative Authority Control.

What was the added value of the seminar?

It gave an opportunity to exchange on a peer-to-peer level with experts from the Netherlands, Malta and Belgium on the organisation and workings of their asylum and reception systems.
