DESCRIPTION

The aim of this module is to provide asylum officials with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply the refugee and subsidiary protection criteria in standard cases to determine whether an applicant is in need of international protection.

This module focuses on the competencies required to carry out the tasks of asylum officials by analysing all the requisites of refugee status and their application in accordance with the 1951 Refugee Convention and the qualification directive, along with all the requisites laid down in the qualification directive for subsidiary protection status. The module reflects EU and international case-law and focuses on cases that do not rely on complex interpretation of the elements of both definitions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

1. Analyse each requisite for refugee status in accordance with the Refugee Convention and the Qualification Directive in standard cases

2. Analyse each requisite for subsidiary protection according to international law and the qualification directive in standard cases

DELIVERY METHOD

This module is delivered through a blended learning methodology (online, face-to-face and independent learning). Online learning contains learning activities and interactive content, and face-to-face sessions focus on the application of the acquired knowledge and skills through different learning activities and case studies.

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

The assessment strategy is based on one assessment at the end of the module. Questions are scenario based and assess the elements of both learning.
